Over a dozen of our finest Christian musicians will gather at Wartburg College. John Ylvisaker, Ken Medema, Handt Hanson, Lost & Found, Agape, Jonathan Rudman and others will present a free concert on Saturday, June 1 at 7 pm. Generous free will donations will add to the establishment of the Borning Cry Award Fund. Paul Oman will be painting a Borning Cry mural live during the concert and Sunday morning worship. Dr. Lee Nelson will direct a choir performing original Wartburg Choral Series works. With registration, workshops are also offered by the visiting musicians. Thrivent Members

Thank you to those of you who directed your Choice dollars from Thrivent to Redeemer this past year.  As you may remember those monies are divided between our youth program (Triennial Youth Convention) and the Trust Fund.  In 2012, the Choice dollars totaled $4432.

This is a reminder that you have until March 31 to direct your allocated Choice dollars for 2012.  That can be done online at Thrivent.com by selecting "get started" or by calling 1-800-847-4836 and saying "Thrivent Choice".
Also new for 2013 --- Choice dollars cannot be set up to automatically go to a charity.  When you have dollars available to direct, you must contact them to have that happen.  If Thrivent has your email address, you will get an email notification. ~ Your Redeemer Thrivent Advocates

Care & Repair

Redeemer’s Care and Repair volunteers met on Saturday, January 12 to organize for the coming year.  10 volunteers participated in the meeting.  Mike Aubrey and Paul Pines were elected as captains.  Dave Ghormley will assist them as coordinator, helping to match volunteers to projects. The captains are now ready to begin accepting project requests.

Care and Repair is intended to help Redeemer members with simple but essential home repair and maintenance tasks they are unable to do themselves.  Potential projects would include minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs and yard maintenance. Generally, projects would be one-time or short-term in nature.  For example, lawn mowing for a few weeks while a member is recuperating from illness or injury would be a possible project.  However, a member regularly requiring season-long lawn care probably needs to hire a lawn maintenance service.  Care and Repair will not engage in any project requiring a building permit.  Snow removal is not on the acceptable project list.

Any member can request assistance by filling out and signing a Project Record form available from either of the captains or at the church office.  A family member or other  Redeemer member can initiate a Project Record form on behalf of a member needing       assistance.  However the member owning the property will have to sign the form.  One of the captains will evaluate the project and decide whether or not it will be accepted taking into consideration complexity and safety as well as availability of volunteers with appropriate skill levels.  (The captains will maintain referral lists of Redeemer members who are professional contractors and service providers for who may be able to provide assistance for projects which are not appropriate for volunteers.)

The Care and Repair volunteers want Redeemer members to know:

  • We are looking for more volunteers and we would welcome and encourage women to volunteer (a volunteer needs to be age 18 or older).
  • Any Redeemer member can request assistance; our services are not limited to older  members.
  • We will not accept payment for our work (although we would expect members to pay for materials needed for a project).  We would encourage members we assist to “pay it forward” by using their time and talents to help someone else.  If a member receiving assistance wants to make a cash gift we would suggest a contribution to Redeemer designated for Habitat for Humanity.
  • It is OK to offer coffee, etc. to volunteers (normally we will work in teams).  However, members should be aware that coffee can induce talkativeness on the part of some volunteers.
  • We offer our services in Jesus’ name and to His glory.

Book Corner

Within a time frame of four hours, the brain of Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D, came close to shutting down completely. A 37 yr. old woman with a doctorate degree in the workings of the brain, Jill lived, first-hand, the results of a massive stroke. Her mind deteriorated to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Taylor alternated between two distinct realities: the euphoric nirvana of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace; and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized Jill was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was lost completely. In My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity to recover from a wounded brain to a complete recovery.  This book can be found in the Redeemer Library!

Flowers for the Altar

Sponsoring the altar flowers is a beautiful way to honor loved ones. Please sign up for your desired Sunday on the flower calendar located on the bulletin board outside the office window.

You may fill one container at the cost of $26.40 or you may fill both for $47.80 (Note--two families can sign up for one Sunday). Checks are to be made out to Redeemer and brought to the church office. Please fill out one of the YELLOW flower/bulletin sign-up sheets located in the envelope marked flowers (hanging on the bulletin board). Be sure to designate whether you will pick up the flowers after the service or if you want to them delivered to a shut-in.  These honorariums, rememberances and thanksgivings will be acknowledged in the Sunday bulletin.

Redeemer Trust Fund

It's all about mission! Redeemer created a trust fund to receive and administer gifts. The fund is intended to help the congregation fulfill its mission. Trust fund gifts enhance the congregation's current ministries and help establish new ministries. It provides a stewardship opportunity apart from and above annual giving. The trust fund welcomes special gifts, bequests, estates, insurance, trusts, property and other assets. The giver can assign gifts to the trust fund. Trust fund gifts become an endowment kept separate and independent from other congregation assets. Learn more: contact the church office. Your inquiry and plans are confidential.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 13. In addition to the Lenten theme, "Beyond Question," for our midweek services, we invite you to our daily blog that will touch on the question for the day. http://beyondquestionredeemer.blogspot.com/
Videos of your pastors, printed word, and song/video will be new each day to surround each question. We welcome your thoughts and reflections!
This will augment the devotional material in the book, Beyond Question, available for $8 at church.
We also invite you to participate in a small group each Sunday morning during the Sunday School hour to journey together as we reflect on the week’s questions.
We hope you'll join us. ~ Pastors Lissa and Dan
